THE FUTURE OF RNODE - RNODEMAN

Gentlemen, we are closer to the future of RNode than ever before.

I have been pressing on with my work on librnode as mentioned in the Reticulum Matrix channel some time ago. For those who do not know, librnode is a C library for interfacing with RNodes. It allows people to easily write applications for interacting with RNodes directly in C / C++ (e.g. for configuring, updating, etc). Now, the library is close to feature complete and functions incredibly well, as seen in my recent video update which you can find here.

The first program to utilise this library will be rnodeman. rnodeman will be very similar to rnodeconf and will indeed have the same features, but with several enhancements, namely:

written in C - no python interpreter needed
ability to import / register third party boards - no more editing the source code!
ability to download firmware updates over RNS or the internet

…and likely more when finished!

openCom XL restock

Many have asked, “when will the openCom XL be back in stock?”. I will take this opportunity to let you all know that I aim to have it back in stock before the end of the year. The reason for this is it is currently undergoing a design revision. Once the units are available I will announce the restock by sending out another newsletter.

Various improvements are in the works for the firmware powering the openCom XL, the latest version of which will ship with the devices from this batch. So many improvements in fact, you will be able to fedpost with style never seen before.

Work on the new device update and configuration utility is still ongoing. Currently, I am working on a library which can be used to interface with RNodes, which I will be using in the core utility itself. This week, I have been implementing and polishing RNode flashing, see this video here. This will open the door for other developers to write their own C / C++ (no Rust library - leftist freaks seethe) programs managing RNodes, without all the hard work!

The window for pre-orders closes tomorrow at 6pm GMT. All pre-orders will then be prepared and shipped in late March, and should arrive on the date given in your order confirmation email if you ordered from me.

Greetings all!

I hope you all had an excellent Christmas! I have 2 announcements to make:

the window for openCom XL pre-orders has been extended to January 31st!
you can now also pre-order WisBlock SX1280 modules for your DIY RNodes as part of this same batch!

So if you have a backup of Hillary Clinton’s famous emails somewhere, and fancy sending them to your mates through Reticulum, be my guest!

Of course, such a high-speed modem is also useful for more boring endeavours, such as transmitting the entire King James Version of the Bible (4MB) in just a couple of minutes!

An update on the new device update and configuration utility I mentioned in the last newsletter will be sent out in the coming weeks.

OPENCOM XL - BATCH 1 SHIPPING MARCH 2025

Hello again!

Firstly, I should mention freeNode has been renamed to the openCom XL. This is largely for marketing purposes, but for all intents and purposes it is the same product as before.

The openCom XL has sold out, but have no fear, I have opened preorders, which will be shipping early next year (March 2025)! The window for preorders will be closing on the 31st of December, so make sure you get your order in before then!

If you’ve been holding out till now because you haven’t had the opportunity to purchase one for yourself, now is the time!

A new firmware update (along with an exciting new device update and configuration utility) is just around the corner, which I will be very excited to share with you all when they are ready! Stay tuned in the meantime ;)

I should also mention, I added a post to my site recently demonstrating the practical communication range of the openCom XL in a real-life scenario. You can find it here. More to come with regard to this in the future.

Finally, I should note that for those who are reading this in the UK, congratulations for surviving the storm! Unfortunately I expect the same cannot be said for some of the trees in your area. A classic battle, the great oak vs some cheeky gust of wind (trees currently seething).

Bet you forgot about me, huh?

It’s been a long time hasn’t it? Many developments have happened here at LES after the cancellation of the openCom LTE last year. Namely, I have pivoted markets. For those who subscribed to our newsletter exclusively for Framework Laptop expansion cards, you may wish to unsubscribe, as I will no longer be producing these.

What have I been working on? LoRa radio communication.

I have been working on a new device known as freeNode, which will give users the ability to freely exchange information over LoRa using the Reticulum protocol, in other words, the ungovernable internet. I have been hard at work contributing to the open source firmware for this device, the RNode Firmware CE repo, and have used all of my knowledge gained in this endeavour to produce something truly suited for modern off-grid communication. If this interests you, feel free to stick around, there will be more updates soon. For those of you who are not interested, I am sorry to see you go!

OPENCOM LTE UPDATE

Hello again lads. We’re quickly reaching out to provide an update regarding the current status of our upcoming product, the openCom LTE.

We have been continuously iterating on what we thought was a complete design, since practice makes perfect of course :)

Our prototypes of the openCom LTE are now in production, and we will begin testing them as soon as they arrive. Given that everything goes to plan, we expect to be able to sell these prototypes hopefully before the end of September. We do apologise for the delay, but we aim to be very strict on quality here at LES, rather than shipping something incomplete, as many modern businesses like to do ;)

We will be in touch again soon if everything goes to plan, and we are likely to begin shipping.

AN AGILEPILLED BEGINNING

Our site is now live! We’ve been incredibly hard at work for the past couple of months, but good things come to those who wait, except Venezuela apparently.

We have two announcements to make. Firstly, the design of the Framework Laptop LTE expansion card, or openCom LTE as we are now calling it, is complete. We will manufacture prototypes within the next month or so and likely begin offering them through our store some time after if the design is adequate.

OPENCOM LTE CANCELLATION

We have recently been evaluating the viability of our openCom LTE project, and several issues have become apparent to us. Unfortunately, due to many factors (demand, cost, etc.), we have chosen to discontinue this project, and will be issuing refunds to customers who pre-ordered, starting today.

It certainly has been an interesting journey developing this product, and given it’s been our first embedded system we have produced, we have learnt a lot which will certainly assist us in the future.

This is certainly not the last you will see of us, we already have another project in the works, which will be announced soon™.
